Women Artists in the Japanese Postwar Avant-Garde: Celebrating a Multiplicity

The exhibition “Zen'ei no Josei, 1950–1975/Japanese Women Artists in Avant-Garde Movements, 1950–1975” was organized by at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan, in 2005. The exhibition presented 220 objects by 46 women artists engaged with the historical context of postwar Japanese avant-garde movements. Most of these artists have failed to earn the recognition they deserve, largely due because of the historical relegation to oblivion of women artists by the mainstream Japanese art world. The writer goes on to highlight the work of four of these extraordinary women: Saori Akutagawa, Mitsuko Tabe, Sayako Kishimoto, and Miyori Hayashi.
